  • Gujarat is one of the richest areas on earth, with the highest GDP per capita in India, and one of the highest in the world. Throughout history, Gujarat has had a major influence on India and the rest of the world. Mohandas Gandhi, one of the most influential people of modern times, was from Gujarat, for example. The Majority of Gujaratis are of the Jain religion, with Hindus and "Freethinkers" being the largest minorities. Gujarat is the only state in India with a Jain majority. Partially owing to that majority, most of the settlements are highly urbanized, with farming accounting for less of the Gujarati economy than in most other Indian states. Karnavati is the traditional capital of Gujarat, but in the 20th century, a settlement named Gandhi Nagar (after Mohandas Gandhi) and located just a few tens of km away from Karnavati, officially became the new capital. Gandhi Nagar was built on traditional Indian principles, and many of the buildings in the city are built entirely from stone, without any steel. Even though the majority of the buildings do, actually, have steel skeletons, they are constructed with attention to detail in mind. Gujarat is known for its large number of universities, as well. Many Gujaratis are employed in academic, artistic, and computer science fields. Besides Jains, another major religious group - seen as a sect of Hinduism - is Swaminarayanism, which is the religion of 10% of Gujaratis. Contributing significantly to the architecture of India and many other countries, numerous mandirs have been constructed by those of Swaminarayanism. The sub-sect, BAPS, in particular, is known for its Akshardham temples, which are built completely in a traditional manner to this day. Gujarat was the first political entity in modern times to declare itself fully vegetarian (banning all forms of meat and other products made from animals that had to be killed). This later had a hand in persuading the entire nation of India (as well as Sundarapore) to consider and eventually implement the same law.
