When Worf returned to defend his honor, K'mpec tried to make Worf leave Qo'noS quickly to preserve his own life, although acknowledging that Worf's sense of honor showed him to be a true Klingon, but when Worf refused, he was willing to sacrifice Worf to prevent a civil war. In the end, K'mpec accepted Worf's plan, that Worf would not be killed, but rather accept discommendation. He told all people involved never to talk about the truth to preserve the Klingon Empire. (TNG: "Sins of the Father" ) The next year, he discovered that he had been poisoned with Veridium Six in his bloodwine for months. He suspected one of the two main rivals for his succession, Duras and Gowron, to be responsible for this. As he thought that no one in the Klingon Empire could be trusted enough to conduct an independent investigation, he named Jean-Luc Picard as the Arbiter of Succession. Initially Picard refused, but K'mpec told him that a refusal would be an insult to all Klingons and that a man capable of poisoning the chancellor, considered a dishonorable method of killing when compared to a face-to-face assassination, would be capable of anything, including a war with the Federation. A few days later, K'mpec died, leaving Picard with the task to discover the truth about the identity of his murderer. (TNG: "Reunion" ) The IKS K'mpec was named for him. (DS9: "Image in the Sand", "The Siege of AR-558") K'mpec was played by Charles Cooper, who previously portrayed the Klingon General Korrd in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. It was never revealed exactly who had poisoned K'mpec, but Ronald D. Moore stated "Our intention was that Duras had poisoned him." (AOL chat, 1997 ) It is also of interest that Gowron, who replaced K'mpec, did indeed start a war with the Federation in 2372, only five years after K'mpec had feared just such an event. A younger K'mpec, played by Blake Hammond, appeared in the video game Star Trek: Klingon Academy.

Vymyslel tedy plán, že z této kolaborace s nepřítelem obviní někoho jiného, a to Mogha, jiného vlivného Klingona, který byl v té době také na Khitomeru a zemřel při útoku. K'mpec si jako objetního beránka vybral právě Mogha zejména proto, že jeho jedinný syn Worf, toho času důstojník Hvězdné flotily nežije v Říši a nepřijde obhajovat čest svého otce. Nicméně K'mpec nevěděl o dalším Moghově synovi Kurnovi, který o této události svého staršího bratra Worfa informoval. Když Worf přicestoval na Qo'noS, aby bránil svou čest, tak se ho K'mpec snažil přesvědčit, aby planetu v tichosti opustil, ale když Worf odmítl, tak ho byl K'mpec ochoten obětovat, aby zabránil občanské válce. Nakonec K'mpec přijal Worfův plán, že Worf nebude zabit za skutky svého otce, ale že přijme svou hanbu. K'mpec si poté od všech zasvědcených vyžádal přísahu, že nikdy neřeknou pravdu, aby ochránili Klingonskou říši. (TNG: "Sins of the Father") Následující rok K'mpec zjistil, že byl několik měsíců pomalu tráven Veridiem 6, které někdo přidával do jeho krvavého vína. Předpokládal, že za tento skutek je odpovědný jeden ze dvou hlavních rivalů o jeho následnictví Duras nebo Gowron. Věděl že nikomu v Říši nemůže věřit, že by odpovědně vedl vyšetřování jeho smrti, a proto tento úkol svěřil Jean-Lucovi Picardovi a jmenoval ho arbitrem následnictví. O několik dní později zemřel. (TNG: "Reunion") K'mpecova smrt nebyla nikdy uspokojivě vysvětlena. I když Gowron při rozhovoru s velvyslankyní K'Ehleyr utrousil několik narážek, které by na něj mohly ukazovat jako na možného vraha, tak je pravděpodobnější, že byl vrahem Duras. Tuto doměnku také v jednom rozhovoru potvrdil scénárista Ronald D. Moore.
