While raised on Sanghelios in the traditional ways of the Vadum clan, from which his mother hailed, his paternal name hails from Ketesh, despite being that of an extinct empire. The exact identity of his father remains a closely kept secret within his immediate family, and has been a source of great shame. On the other hand, it has endeared him among many Kaaranese Sangheili serving in the Covenant and later Separatist military, who see him as a person who bridges the gulf between the two cultures and symbolises their unity. That he bears the name of a dead nation is also an oddity, though he has made purchases in the northern continent surrounding the area after the end of the War of Vengeance, in anticipation of establishing himself as the head of a new dynasty in the reclaimed land, bringing welath in the form of Sanghelios engineers and merchants. His war record is long and prestigious, primarily serving during his days in the Covenant in Heretic suppression campaigns and, after the Great Schism, participated in the Battle of High Charity, "liberating" a Jiralhanae-held cruiser and commandeering it as his own. During the subsequent Schism, and the later War of Vengeance, 'Keltam served as a Shipmaster in thirteen combat theatres against the Jiralhanae, eventually being promoted to Fleet Master.
