  • Nanoprobes is a form of nanotechnology used by the Borg to assimilate others into the Collective. They are injected into the bloodstreams of victims they are quickly able to gain control of the victim's cellular functions. (VOY: "Scorpion") Given the inherent self-replicating nature of nanoprobes, they could also be used to build new pieces of technology or even space vessels. One such ship was observed in 2385, grown after its six inhabitants disconnected from their Collective. (Star Trek: Abandoned: "Solitude")
  • Nanoprobes can also be modified for a variety of medical of technical tasks, and have also been modified for warfare. In 2374, the USS Voyager discovered that the Borg were at war with Species 8472, and they were caught in the middle as they had to cross Borg space. When Harry Kim was attacked by a Species 8472, The Doctor was able to treat him with modified Borg nanoprobes to kill off the 8472 cells in Kim's body. The Borg later discovered this technique and worked together with Voyager to drive Species 8472 from the Delta Quadrant with modified nanoprobes incorporated into torpedoes. (VOY episode: "Scorpion, Part II")
  • Each drone's nanoprobes have a unique encoding sequence. (VOY: "One") Seven of Nine's body contained 3.6 million nanoprobes as of 2377. (VOY: "Inside Man") When Borg drones attempted to assimilate Doctor Phlox of Enterprise NX-01, his Denobulan immune system was able to fight off the nanoprobes long enough for him to discover that they were vulnerable to omicron particles. However the scale of the radiation dose required to destroy every nanoprobe in his body in one blast before they could adapt to the treatment meant that this method could not be used against the assimilation process on a larger scale, Phlox only surviving due to the immune system that allowed him to resist them for so long. (ENT: "Regeneration")

(ENT: "Regeneration") In 2371, Beverly Crusher removed a nanoprobe from Geordi La Forge after he had been captured and tortured by Tolian Soran. (Star Trek Generations) The novelization of the film explains the nanoprobe that Crusher removed was a Borg nanoprobe put in La Forge's heart by Soran to stop it at will. In 2374, The Doctor was able to modify nanoprobes as an offensive weapon against Species 8472. He reprogrammed them to mimic the alien cells' electrochemical signatures, so that they could evade detection by Species 8472's immune system while continuing to assimilate. These nanoprobes could be delivered inside a photon torpedo or along a phaser beam. (VOY: "Scorpion", "Scorpion, Part II", "Prey") Nanoprobes could also be modified to attack specific cells which contained a virus or some other disease and so help the patient recover. In 2375, Seven of Nine encoded some of her nanoprobes to assimilate the synthehol molecules in Kadi Ambassador Tomin's bloodstream, allowing him to recover from his intoxication in time to return to his people. (VOY: "Someone to Watch Over Me") Nanoprobes can also be modified to repair damaged tissue. Between 2248 and 2378 the probe Friendship 1 crashed on Otrin's homeworld and Otrin's species attempted to use the probe's Antimatter warp drive to power their electrical grid. The reactor exploded and poisoned the atmosphere with radiation. The crew of USS Voyager was sent to the surface to recover the probe and brought back Otrin and Brin's baby with them. Seven of Nine and The Doctor modified Seven's nano probes to repair the damaged tissue and remove the radiation from their bodies. With the test successful the Voyager crew then applied it to Otrin's species to treat the effects of their radiation exposure after restoring their world. (VOY: "Friendship One") Since bio-neural circuitry is organic in nature, nanoprobes could also be used to influence or disable this type of circuitry. (VOY: "Warhead") In 2377, Borg nanoprobes were worth six bars of latinum each on the open market. In that year, Ferengi marauders attempted to obtain Seven of Nine's nanoprobes by perpetrating an elaborate scheme, in which a reprogrammed hologram of Reginald Barclay would bring the USS Voyager to them through a geodesic fold, with the effect of killing the entire crew due to the radiation they were exposed to while traversing the fold. (VOY: "Inside Man")

(VOY episode: "Scorpion, Part II") A Founder encountered by the crew of the USS Defiant in 2376 was able to destroy nanoprobes by shapeshifting and crushing them when they had been injected into her body. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Lesser Evil) In 2377 a group of Vulcans attempted to use nanoprobes to devise a cure for Bendii syndrome. Unfortunately they lost control and in the process created The Wardens, a group bent on Vulcan logic with a Borg like devotion to spreading their cause. The Wardens spread their influence to numerous nearby worlds, mass producing their modified nanoprobes to take control of billions of people. As the Wardens approached galactic domination a team from the USS Incursion was able to access their headquarters on Vulcan and reprogram the nanoprobe factories to produce nanoprobes with conflicting orders which cancelled out the effects of the Wardens and returned the galaxy's populace to normal. (ST video game: Away Team) In 2380, Cadet Torvig Bu-Kar-Nguv on board the USS Titan initiated a series of experiments on his crewmates including adjusting the replicators to infuse nanoprobes into the crew's food which would then attach to their intestinal walls. Torvig was hoping to test whether the expression "gut feelings" had any basis in fact. (TTN novel: Orion's Hounds) In 2381, nanoprobes were revealed to be corrupted versions of Caeliar Catoms - and in doing so, revealed the origins of the Borg. When the Caeliar dissolved the Borg Collective, they transformed the nanoprobes of every Borg drone (and former drone) into catoms, restoring their individuality and allowing them to join the Caeliar.
