Long Island University (LIU) is a private university based in Long Island, New York. Established in 1926, the Brooklyn Campus is an ethnically-diverse urban campus located in downtown Brooklyn which houses 209 degree and certificate programs at the associates, undergraduate, and graduate level. The original campus of LIU, located across the street from Junior's restaurant, includes the Brooklyn Paramount Theater, the world’s first theater built expressly for talking pictures. The theater was bought in 1960 by LIU and converted into a gymnasium in 1963. The original Wurlitzer organ is used during campus basketball games. The Brooklyn campus also hosts the Friends World Program, an international college of global studies. The campus houses recognized graduate programs in Clinical Psychology

It is also the home of the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds, an NCAA Division I athletics program with 17 teams under the new Wellness, Recreation and Athletics Center, a $40 million dollar facility with swimming facilities, a fitness center and a 2,000-person arena.
