Sebastián Piñera of the Christian Democrat Party won election in the second round against Gremialist and former Minister of Finance Hernán Larraín (who had resigned to his position to run for the presidency), pitting candidates from the same political coalition against each other for the first time. With his victory, Piñera became the first billionaire to be elected and inaugurated President of Chile. Voter turnout was estimated at roughly 81.4%, the highest turnout since 1990.
