"X" was born on the south side of Chicago in 1960s to Chicago Airline Engineer Curtis Smith and his wife Kathy. "X" had close relationship with his mother, as Curtis descripted it Kathy was like his best friend. On his 13th birthday, Kathy bought "X" a pair of roller skates and at some point give a neck piece that said Mom's #1 Skater. "X" at some point in his childhood met Naomi Phillips, who would become a close friend of his, and the friendship would later blossom in into a romance. "X" enjoyed roller skating at the local roller disco Palisade Garden Skating Rink or the Garden with his friends Junior, Boo, Naps and Mixed Mike. In 1976, "X" won the 1st place trophy in the freestyle roller skating completion. In 1977, 2 weeks before Christmas, Kathy died of a heart condition. The death of
