  • The Rigellians were hulking green-skinned sentient humanoids from Rigel VII. Due to the high gravity of their home planet, the reptilian Rigellians were very large-framed, dense, and heavily-muscled. This made them formidible foes on normal gravity planets, on which they were reportedly strong enough to tear apart vehicles and other metal objects. Rigellians sometimes were employed as assassins due to their impressive physical prowess. At the time of the Galactic Civil War, they were nearly extinct. The bounty hunter with the alias of Darth Vader's porter belonged to this species.

  • The Rigellians were a species of intelligent turtles. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture) Rigellians were believed to have four or five genders, according to information obtained by Doctor Phlox. (ENT: "Cogenitor") Also, the Rigellians were responsible for developing a unique gene therapy technique that was capable of curing medical conditions such as Taggart's Syndrome. (ENT: "Demons", "Terra Prime") Rigellian commerce was regulated by the Rigellian Trade Commission during the 22nd century. (ENT: "United") In 2154, a Rigellian scoutship fell victim to an attack by a Romulan drone ship which disguised itself as Earth starship Enterprise in order to destabilize the sector. Recognizing the vessel, the Trade Commission contacted Starfleet to demand compensation for the loss of their vessel and the arrest of Enterprise's commanding officer, Captain Jonathan Archer. (ENT: "United") In early 2155, the Rigellians participated in talks discussing their wish to join as a possible member in the Coalition of Planets along with Humans, Tellarites, Andorians, Coridans, and Vulcans. (ENT: "Demons", "Terra Prime") During the negotiations, six of the Earth universal translators experienced a "glitch" and started confusing the Rigellian language with Andorian. (ENT: "Terra Prime")
  • The term 'Rigellian' is used by most other species as a blanket term for several sentient species who cohabit the Rigel system, including: * Rigelians (also known as the Jelna) * Chelon * Bodas * Vulcanoid Rigellians (Zami, V’gelnians) * Humanoid Rigellians (Aulians, Kaylar) The number of different species who refer to themselves as 'Rigellians' has led to considerable confusion - this is because Rigel is a thriving, crowded system with several native sentient species. The Rigelian Jelna and Chelon evolved independently on different worlds within the Rigel system, and the Vulcanoid Rigellians are descended from Vulcans who rejected the teachings of Surak and settled in the system during the Time of Awakening. The Bodas originated as the pets of an extinct Rigellian civilisation known as 'The Masters', and were genetically engineered by The Masters to serve as their successors. And finally, the Aulians and Kaylar evolved indpendently on Rigel VII, but may be descendants from an offshoot of humanity that was transplanted to Rigel at some point during human history. By the 22nd century, these species - with the exclusion of the Humanoid Rigellians - had unified to form the United Rigel Worlds and Colonies, which is loosely governed by two rival organisations: the Rigellian Trade Commission (where Jelna hold most key leadership positions) and the Rigellian Trade Authority (led by the Bodas). The Rigel system is a major hub for interstellar commerce, and all Rigellians enjoy a reputation as skilled traders and negotiators. Seeking Starfleet protection from Klingon aggression, the URWC joined the United Federation of Planets in 2164. They negotiated very favourable terms of membership which allowed them to maintain several moons and planets as free trade worlds where Federation trade regulations do not apply. The Rigel Free Trade Zone (operated by the Rigellian Trade Authority) allows the Rigellians to continue trading with the Orions and several other species against whom the Federation Council has levelled embargos, and it has become a hotbed for smugglers and other interstellar undesirables. Ships registered through the Rigel Trade Authority can claim Rigellian sovereignty to avoid an inspection by Starfleet. The United Rigel Worlds and Colonies also has significant expatriate populations of Coridanites, Ithenites, Xarantine, and even Humans, who established the New Burbank Colony on Rigel IV during the 2090s.
