Dopefish are large, green scaled, buck-toothed ichthyoids that are believed to be the second-dumbest creature in the universe, runner up to the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. They have very low brain function, with thought patterns that reportedly only go: "swim, swim, hungry, swim, swim, hungry". They are tremendously opportunistic, and will eat anything that moves, but apparently favor a diet of heroes, such as Commander Keen.

- Daniel Dopefish was born in 1957, to loving parents Holina Dopefish and William Dopefish. When they found out his I.Q. by taking the Uncyclopedia I.Q. test, they then abandoned him by throwing him down a well, which, for unknown reasons, was the size of the entire ocean. Seriously, no one saw that one coming.
- The Dopefish is a buck-toothed fish found in the Well of Wishes in Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy! The Dopefish is the second dumbest creature in the world, as the first dumbest is mentioned in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal that believes if you can't see it, it can't see you ; thus making you safe from it if you throw a towel over your head. It is found in Quake in E2M3: the Crypt of Decay as well as in Quake 2 in the Cooling Factory level. It is not present in Quake 64 for unspecified reasons.
- Dopefish is a commonly appearing easter egg in older video games, starting back in 1991. It was created by Tom Hall as a character idea for an episode of Commander Keen. It has appeared in various classic shooters, such as Doom II and Quake. Dopefish is found in the Max Payne game, in a secret ammunition room whilst Max Payne is pursuing Vinnie Gognitti. It is found in the style of a poster, with the caption 'Dopefish Lives' in bold letters. Dopefish is seen wielding two handguns, seemingly similar to the 9mm handguns that Max Payne uses.

The Dopefish was originally drawn by Tom Hall as a stupid fish, but it became extremely popular with fans of Commander Keen. Apogee Software started to use it for its tech support staff. It then became a gag among Id Software, Apogee, and any friends to put the Dopefish as a cameo character in their games. It is found in Quake in E2M3: the Crypt of Decay as well as in Quake 2 in the Cooling Factory level. It is not present in Quake 64 for unspecified reasons. It is found in Deus Ex: Human Revolution near the DRB weapon cache in Detroit. The Dopefish also appears as an easter egg in the video game Rage also by Id Software, and can be activated by shooting 3 lights above a sunken ship during the Shipwreck Cove portion of the Mutant Bash-TV chapter. It is also found in 2016 Doom in select levels on Chinese Takeout Boxes, called "Dopechan Noodles".

Dopefish can also be found as an Easter egg in another Remedy game, Alan Wake. It is found in the second storey of a book store.
