Operation: LOOSE END was an operation in the early stages of the Remnant War, launched by the United Nations Space Command on November 22, 2553. The objective was to kill the warlord Jiralhanae Chieftain Loragus, leader of the Covenant remnant faction, Loragus's Covenant. This faction had established itself more quickly than other factions as a military power, and was responsible for several attacks on UNSC space as well as assaults on the True Covenant and Covenant Reborn. In retaliation for these attacks, the UNSC launched Operation: LOOSE END to kill Loragus and eliminate his Covenant as a threat. This faction had established itself more quickly than other factions as a military power, and was responsible for several attacks on UNSC space as well as assaults on the True Covenant and Covenant Reborn. In retaliation for these attacks, the UNSC launched Operation: LOOSE END to kill Loragus and eliminate his Covenant as a threat. Although the objective was achieved and Loragus killed, it had several unintended consequences. The elimination of Loragus's forces as a coherent power stalled the attacks on Human territory, but also strengthened the True Covenant and the fledgeling Covenant Reborn by ending Loragus's attacks on them, lessening the military pressure on the two strongest Covenant factions. Even worse, Loragus's forces remained active, but lacked direction, and were claimed by a number of independent warlords, most notably the Prophet of Faith. Following the UNSC's failure to inflict damage on the Covenant as a whole during the operation, it would look more closely at the complex overall situation of the Covenant factions before attempting to attack any one part of it. This approach eventually led to the UNSC's campaign to subtly destabilise the Covenant factions into further destructive war with one another.
