    • Shire or Drann (W."Sûza" S."Trann") was a term for a formally autonomous fief or province within the late Númenórean administration system. The Shire of the Hobbits, and many other similar administration units were further divided into four farthings or tharni. See: * Shire of the hobbits

    • A shire was a one of the most common beasts of burden used on Tython at the time of the Je'daii Order, characterized by veined wings, hooves, and a single horn. A particular small species of shire, thinner than those found elsewhere on Tython, made its home in the Silent Desert, where the water humps it bore on its back and neck aided in its survival.

    • The Shire was the homeland of the majority of the Hobbits in Middle-earth. It was located in the northwestern portion of Middle-earth, in the northern region of Eriador, within the remains of the Kingdom of Arnor. By the Third Age it was one of the few heavily-populated areas left in Eriador. Its name in Westron was Sûza, "Shire," or Sûzat, "The Shire." Contrary to popular misconception, The Shire was not the birthplace of Frodo Baggins, as he was born in Buckland, which at the time was not part of the Shire, even though it was colonized by Shire Hobbits.
    • A Shire is a heavy horse, used for plowing, farm work, and bearing heavy loads. Generally gentle, but exceedingly strong, they are prized as carthorses and, despite their size, for those who aren't.. precisely.. the best of riders. House Seamel is famous for horse breeding in general, but like the Paso Fino, the Shire breeds that come out of Seamel lands are highly prized.

    • A Shire is a heavy horse, used for plowing, farm work, and bearing heavy loads. Generally gentle, but exceedingly strong, they are prized as carthorses and, despite their size, for those who aren't.. precisely.. the best of riders. Standing on average at eighteen hands at the shoulder, Shires come in bays, black bays, and chestnuts primarially. Not fast, as horses go, they have been traditionally bred for loads over all else. Wild Shires are very uncommon, usually 'feral' herds that have slowly accumulated as those that breed the beasts have lost intractible or overcurious mounts. That said, the wild ones have become prized for their spirit - a cut above the long-domesticated breeds. House Seamel is famous for horse breeding in general, but like the Paso Fino, the Shire breeds that come out of Seamel lands are highly prized.

At the end of the Third Age, Saruman (known then as Sharkey) tried to take control of it for a very short period, but was killed in the Battle of Bywater, which ended the War of the Ring.
