  • Model Congress
rdfs:comment
  • Model Congress gives students a chance to engage in a role-playing simulation of the United States Congress. Such events are hosted by the Congress itself, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, and Harvard. Some middle and high schools, specifically those in the Princeton area participate in model congress. For two months, students in these schools research 36 different topics, write persuasive essays on them, then form groups, where they write bills which are later discussed in a congress made up of two groups: the senate and house of representatives. If the bill is passed in both houses, the "President" or principal as he/she is usually known can sign or veto the bill.

These simulations range in complexity from the government-sponsored Model United States House of Representatives, hosted on Capitol Hill and featuring six Congressional committees to Harvard's simulation featuring both the House and Senate, various committees therein, the Supreme Court, and offshoots in San Francisco and Europe. North Carolina has a program similar to Model Congress called North Carolina Youth Legislative Assembly. The mock assembly models the North Carolina General Assembly but also uses parliamentary procedure and Robert's Rules of Order.
