He played junior hockey for the Chicoutimi Saguenéens from 1976 to 1978 and signed with the Birmingham Bulls of the World Hockey Association (WHA) as an underage player in 1978. He scored 26 goals for the Bulls in 1978-79. When the WHA and the NHL merged in 1979 Sleigher found himself a free agent and signed with the Quebec Nordiques. He spent more time in the minor pros initially but did get to play 51 games for the Nords in 1982-83. In 1983-84 he played 34 games in the regular season.

He spent more time in the minor pros initially but did get to play 51 games for the Nords in 1982-83. In 1983-84 he played 34 games in the regular season. In the 1984 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Sleigher was a major part of the infamous Good Friday Massacre in which he knocked former Canadiens player Jean Hamel unconscious by hitting him with a sucker punch while many players from both teams were participating in the infamous brawl. After playing 6 games for Quebec the following season, Sleigher would be dealt to Boston where he would play two more seasons before retiring in 1986.
