- The ReactOS kernel is a re-implementation of Windows' ntoskrnl.exe, for Windows Server 2003. It has been combined with a port of the WINE project to provide a userland for the operating system, which is mostly identical to the standard userland available on Windows. As a result, ReactOS is able to run any programs which WINE can run, and WINE has access to what the internals of Windows probably look like, advancing both projects to provide support for Windows programs on UNIX-like systems, such as Microsoft's Xenix, GNU\Linux, FreeBSD, and other operating systems. ReactOS also has limited support for DirectX 9, allowing some games available for Windows XP to run normally under ReactOS without modification.
- ReactOS is a computer operating system intended to be binary-compatible with application software and device drivers made for Microsoft Windows NT versions 5.x and up (Windows 2000 and its successors). It is composed entirely of free software, by means of a complete clean room reverse engineering process. Although the project is in the alpha development stage as of 2008, many Windows programs already work well. While the ReactOS kernel has been written from scratch, the userland is based on the Wine compatibility layer for Unix-like operating systems.

| - ReactOS is an open source clone of Windows NT based Operating Systems. It is only in the alpha stage of development but in the future we will be able to dump Windows from our computers and use ReactOS. Despite decades in development, ReactOS is still considered alpha software that’s recommended for testing and evaluation purposes. You probably won’t want to replace your primary operating system with ReactOS anytime soon. (...) But fans of open source software, not to mention fans of the classic Windows experience who have been less-than-thrilled with the direction Microsoft has taken in recent years might want to keep an eye on this project. We might of course, switch to Linux first.
