Wise Snake Pass was found in the Gamanzure no Oka mountains by a ronin scout in the 8th century. It was said that the name was honoring the infamous Snake Clan, the clan to whom the scout supposedly worked, but other argued it was named for the path's snakelike movement through the hills. Wise Snake Pass Road was built crossing it.
