Dispatch boats were small boats, and sometimes large ships, tasked to carry military dispatches from ship to ship or from ship to shore or, in some cases from shore to shore. Dispatch boats were employed when other means of transmitting a message was not possible or safe or as quick. Dispatch boats, which performed their dispatch-carrying duties only on a temporary basis, should not be confused with Packet ships—sometimes called packetboats or paquetbots—which were cargo ships which also routinely carried the mail from port to port.

- A dispatch boat was a small spacecraft used for interstellar communication purposes. They typically massed around 40,000 tons and had a crew of about ten. In order to provide message security, most modern vessels were designed not only with software and hardware firewalls, but also used physical separation to prevent systems such as navigational computers, which could be slaved to traffic control stations such as Manticoran Astro Control, from being used to access a message bank.

Generally, dispatch boats served the military, and paquetbots served commerce.

Dispatch boats were typically capable of high rates of acceleration, sacrificing comfort for speed, allowing some to pull 800 gravities of acceleration. (SI1)
