He played junior hockey for the Calgary Buffalos and the Edmonton Oil Kings from 1966 to 1970. The Oakland Seals chose him 47th overall in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. After spending two years in the American Hockey League McAnneley joined the Seals for two seasons (1972-73 & 1973-74). He was demoted in 1974-75 to the Salt Lake Golden Eagles where he was named to the Central League second all star team. In the NHL McAneeley played in 158 games and scored 8 goals and 35 assists. In his one WHA season he scored 2 goals and 17 assists in 79 games.
