His mother was a magisterial beauty. A woman with hair that could only be described in great detail (for the shades changed so often in different lights that it was almost impossible to tell what color it was) and a face that was… soft, yet stern, like the rugs on the floor of their house. She always looked slightly irritated at one thing or another, whether it be his little sister tracking mud in the house or something as trivial as a fly on the window. Over time he began to hate that particular expression. The one she was, unfortunately, giving him at this minute in time. “Haven’t I told you countless times to finish your chores before playing games?” The four year old blinked his big blue eyes, turning his head to the side as if evaluating his mother from a different angle. “Are you enlightened yet, child?” She asked after a good two minutes had gone by. The irritated expression had left her face and was now being replaced with frustration. If Kim had known what ‘enlightened’ meant, then he probably would have nodded. But – as he was still only a four year old – that extensive vocabulary had yet to enter his mind. Jade, his mother, quickly sighed in the direction of her son. “Stop slacking off. I didn’t have kids just so they could play hooky.” “H-Hwooky?” Kim tried to sound it out in his mouth, but it came out different than how his mother had pronounced it. “Wha-?” “Huh… never mind…” They both stood there for a moment, looking kind of silly in the middle of the kitchen floor with plastic bowls, spoons, and other assorted kitchen ware scattered about (he loved making noise with such things, much to his mothers’ chagrin). As if on cue, a twinkle lit in her own blue eyes, and she stooped down, the irritation and frustration of before vanishing from her face in an instant. “You’re kind of cute though, you know that? I can’t stay mad at you.” Moments later, the two were laughing, Kim’s mother tickling his stomach as he futilely tried to bat her hands away with giggles spilling from his mouth. These days were good, fun, and happy. These were the days he liked to remember. ~~ “You better not make my little sister cry, Ella…” “Oh yeah? What’re you gonna do if I-“ “I won’t do anything, of course.” Kimolione shifted from foot to foot, obviously uncomfortable with this situation. His sister, Hannah, was crying in the background – her little fist gripping the back of his shirt. Turning his attention back to the girl in front of him, Kim sighed. “How come you always try to get me to fight you…?” Ella was five years old, a year younger than him, but much more fiery than the boy. Her face was an unearthly pale color, and her hair was so incredibly black that it was almost downright scary. When she was angry, her lips would purse and she would scrunch up her face angrily until her dark brown eyes seemed to be only two small dots on her face. “You never play games with me anymore! I thought you said we’d always, always, always play games every single day. You promised, remember? You promised!” “Mama said I can’t be your friend anymore,” Kimolione answered calmly, his face failing to betray any remorse over the current predicament. “She said you… umm... oh, yeah, I remember now… she said that you’re a bad ‘influence’. I dunno what influence means though, but it can’t be anything good.” “I’m not a bad infl… ifune… ina… whatever you just said!” “Yes you are!” Kim countered, as if surprised that Ella was questioning his mothers’ wisdom. “Besides, you’re always making Hannah sad. I don’t like it.” “She’s just jealous because you like to play with me and not her.” “Nuh uh!” Hannah answered abruptly, her tears having stopped long ago so her eyes would be clear enough to watch the scene between her big brother and his past friend. “I… not…” She tried forming the words, but it was useless at the age of three. “I not… je’wus…” “Jealous,” Kim correct, his own vocabulary having grown long ago with his mothers’ guidance. “It’s jealous, Hannah.” “Otay…” “You… you…” Ella was the one crying now, trying to wipe the tears off her face with her tiny palms. “You promised!” With that, she was gone, running in the opposite direction to her own home and closing the door in his and Hannah’s faces. They waited there for a while, Hannah looking up at her brother to see if he was okay. Unfortunately, Kimolione wasn’t happy, nor very pleased with himself. He’d always been told by his father that making a girl cry was ungentlemanly behavior and not something a real friend would do. Yet, here he had been doing it to his very best friend in the world. Maybe his mother was wrong to tell him not to play games with Ella. She was a nice enough girl, most of the time, and he enjoyed playing cards and kick ball with her even though she couldn’t run as fast as him. Besides, her health was bad, everyone knew that. He had always felt quite proud of himself whenever he saw her smile, and Ella’s mother used to seem just as pleased that her daughter had made as good a friend as him. At least, Kim had thought he was a good friend… but now, he wasn’t at all sure. ~~ To be added soon.Family Here you can list your characters Family and close Friends.
