McDonough played junior for the St. Catharines Black Hawks, scoring 103 points in 1969-70. The Los Angeles Kings selected him 24th overall in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. He turned pro with the Springfield Kings in 1970-71. In 1972 he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Bob Woytowich. McDonough had a career year with the Penguins in 1972-73, scoring 35 goals and 41 assists. Despite that he was traded to the Atlanta Flames in the following season, when he scored a total of only 27 points. McDonough jumped to the Cleveland Crusaders of the World Hockey Association in 1974-75 and scored 64 points. He played two more seasons for the franchise, including its move to become the Minnesota Fighting Saints. He retired in 1978 after splitting a season between the Detroit Red Wings and the Kansas City Red Wings. McDonough played in 237 NHL games, scoring 73 goals and 88 assists. In the WHA he played in 200 games, scoring 66 goals and 73 assists.
