With Turkey, Iran and Argentina entering the war on Germany’s side, things began to heat up in the Black Sea region. A pre-emptive strike was required on the Red Navy dockyards at Sochi and the Luftwaffe sent several dive bombers and fighter from Turkey to do the mission. Chechen volunteers also attacked the Soviet troops stationed to the north of Grozny, but soon lost heart and gave in. There were heavy losses on all sides ai Sochi due to heavy Soviet ant-aircraft fire and skilful German dive-bombing, but the dockyards were destroyed. This gave Turkey a breathing space and helped divert Soviet forces from the on-going occupation of Iran.
