In early 2019, it joined Uzbekistan and several other countries in a coalition against nearby Kazakhstan. In mid 2019, the coalition invaded the country, with Turkmenistan deploying the second most troops after Uzbekistan. The war resulted in a defeat for Turkmenistan.
