It was universally praised by critics as "smart action" and continued the trend of big-budget, popular and critically acclaimed action movies winning big at awards circuits, winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards, Best Director, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects for a total of eight, the most-ever for a summer blockbuster of its kind (more than the five won by Nolan's previous film, The Dark Knight or four won by Jurassic Park).
