He played hockey at the University of Minnesota from 1979 to 1983. The Minnesota North Stars chose him 181st overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. Before turning professional Bjugstad played for the United States in the 1984 Olympics. Right after the Olympics he turned pro with the North Stars. Bjugstad played mostly part-time for the Stars from 1984 to 1988, splitting time between the NHL and the minor pros. The one exception was the 1985-86 season when he scored 43 goals and 33 assists in 80 games. In 317 NHL games, Bjugstad scored 76 goals and 68 assists.
