The name appears to come from the "pole-axe" famously wielded by knight Sir Anthony Woodville in his War of the Roses tournament battle against the Burgundian Count de la Roche, referred to as "The Bastard". In the book "The Last of the Barons", "by a most dexterous stroke", Sir Anthony got the point of the chevron to stick in the visor of his opponent, who then couldn't see & was able to be moved around at will.
