  • They carry a shieldscreen generator on their back, which deploys a dome-like sphere that blocks all incoming shots; however, it cannot prevent player characters from moving into the dome to attack. They can raise the shield to increase the area protected, but this renders the Shield Bearer immobile. If they are attacked in this state, they will move to a safe distance and raise the shield again. Should multiple shields touch each other they will merge and cover the entire overlaying area. Hectors, Ants and tunnel exits tend to spawn within the dome.
  • A shield bearer was usually a lightly armored soldier who often accompanied a soldier of a higher rank with a protective shield. Thus commanders were often protected by several shield bearers. Other examples are range weapon soldiers with shield bearers such as archers (Hittite chariot archers), Sparabaras, crossbowmen (pavise) or early gunners (Hussite Wars). The Spartan hoplites developed larger hoplite shields when the Macedonian phalanx came up. A shield bearer carried it on the march. In combat he served among the light armed troops, usually as slinger.

Hectors, Ants and tunnel exits tend to spawn within the dome. An easy way to take them out as an Wing Diver is to quickly fly above their shield and drop down, landing on the shield bearer itself. From here you should be able to attack and be protected from most enemies as the Shield Bearer will block the shots itself. Once it falls you can immediately fly off to safety and prepare to take on the fleet. It is also important to keep in mind that they don't drop items in 2025 when killed and are the only enemy that are not continuously spawned. However, they do drop items in EDF 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair. They also move much more quickly when attempting to flee or move to a specific area, such as rendezvousing with other Ravagers. Their AI has been changed and they will actively seek out Ravagers to protect. There is also a new "Elite" Shield Bearer that projects a shield some three times the radius of a normal one.

In the Greek army, shield bearers armed with swords fought alongside phalanxes to protect their unguarded right flank[citation needed]. Greek shield bearers were unarmored except for a helmet[citation needed], and carried a shield and sword[citation needed] (or in some cases, a spear instead). The Spartan hoplites developed larger hoplite shields when the Macedonian phalanx came up. A shield bearer carried it on the march.
