  • Gene Kelly (1912-1996) was an actor, singer and dancer famous for his movie musicals, including An American in Paris (1951) and Singin' in the Rain (1952). He was the guest star on The Muppet Show episode 501. He has the distinction of being in the last episode taped (but not the last one aired). He was a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1982. Kelly died of stroke complications on February 2, 1996.
  • Although he is known today for his performance in Singin' in the Rain, he was a dominant force in Hollywood musical films from the mid 1940s until this art form fell out of fashion in the late 1950s. His many innovations transformed the Hollywood musical film, and he is credited with almost single-handedly making the ballet form commercially acceptable to film audiences. In "Road to Rupert", Stewie Griffin joins Kelly in a performance of "The Worry Song" in Anchors Aweigh in place of Jerry Mouse of Tom and Jerry.

In his later career he starred in two notable films which were outside the musical genre. They are Inherit the Wind (1960) and What a Way to Go!, although his 1955 film It's Always Fair Weather, in later life, gained recognition among his fans largely due to his musical and dance performances.[2] Throughout his career he had directed films, some of

For Disney, Kelly made an appearance in the TV special Mickey's 50, guest-starred on The Muppet Show in episode 501 and appears as an audio-animatronic figure in the Singin' in the Rain scene of The Great Movie Ride. Originally, Mickey Mouse was going to appear in the dancing sequence from Kelly's 1945 film Anchors Aweigh. Some sources claim Walt Disney initially agreed to loan out Mickey, but Roy O. Disney rejected the deal. According to Bob Thomas's book on Roy, the studio was in debt after World War II and they were focusing on trying to get their own films out on time. According to Roy, they had no business making cartoons for other people. So at the last minute, Mickey's appearance in the film was replaced by Tom and Jerry, MGM's famous cartoon stars at that time. Phineas also acted as Kelly in a parody of Singin' in the Rain in the episode Rollercoaster: The Musical! the same made Doof in "The Great Indoors ".
