Bromine reacts with organic matter to an extreme extent. Skin contact can cause lesions and sores. When the bromine evaporates, it becomes a vapor that can irritate and even shut down the lungs. Bromine ingestion through skin, eyes, or mouth can also lead to iodine deficiency which will eventually result in thyroid disease.
