Private investigators were individuals who basically did work-for-hire contract jobs for whomever could afford their prices. Work could include, but was not limited to bodyguarding, security, looking for lost items and individuals. Many who worked as P.I.'s often had a previous career in law enforcement, the military, or some kind of related security work.

- Private Investigator is a mission on CnR. The mission is very similar to the Manhunt mission, but it is only available for civilians. In the mission, you have to locate and find a randomly selected player in a limited time. You must find the designated player in 5 hours in order to complete the mission. You must be an innocent civilian in order to start this mission. It was added in Version 23.
- A private investigator (or simply PI) is an individual who can be hired to undertake investigations. By 2369, Drake Mallory left the Aldebaran Police Department due to frustrations with the corruption within the system and moved to the Rigel system to work as a PI. (Kal-Dixas Spaceport)
