Powell's debut came in 1962, when he competed at Greenville-Pickens. Starting 13th in the field of twenty-one, Powell lost his brakes late in the event but still finished 13th. Powell's other five starts all came in 1963, when he finished 69th in points. He had a very up-and-down season, failing to finish three of his five starts and only finishing in the top-thirty three times. But those good finishes were solid, as Powell finished 15th in the Daytona 500 Qualifier event (he finished 33rd in the actual race), and then back-to-back 10th and 7th place finishes at Weaverville and Hillsboro.
