Gurren (グレン Guren?), was the Gunzar, a custom-class Gunmen piloted by a Beastmen commander before being revamped after its harsh day with the Jiha brother duo, the then "Team Gurren". After being supercharged with Simon's power, it forms the body of the titular mecha Gurren Lagann. It was initially piloted by the main character's brother, Kamina, then Rossiu, briefly Yoko, then Kinon, and finally, Viral.

Gurren was an old smith of Neret Sorr, where he lived with his daughter, Renarr. His wife, Shellas, had been a captain in Urusander's Legion before losing her life in the war with the Jheleck. She had died saving Vatha Urusander from an assassination attempt. After her death, Gurren refused to have any dealings with the Legion or its commander. Gurren was bowed by a lifetime of hard work. He was muscular, but slack skin, watery grey eyes, and a mucous-filled cough betrayed his ill health. He was dying of an illness of the lungs and, still grieving over the loss of his wife, he looked forward to death. He refused to see the Legion's healer, Cutter Aras, because he was ready to be reunited with his wife in death.
