The Road Torch is a Hot Wheels Original Model designed to look like the AMC AMX/2 concept model. Paul Tam designed the original model. The diecast model has opening plastic engine covers on the back. This AMX/2 debuted in the 1971 Hot Wheels series. In 1973, this model was re-released as the Xploder, still with the opening engine covers. In 1975, the AMX/2 was renamed to Warpath for only a couple of releases. In 1985, the AMX/2 was modified: the opening engine covers were gone and were replaced by an engine cover with louvers. This model was named the Redliner and has only one release. In 1987 it was re-released under the name Road Torch.

In 1987 it was re-released under the name Road Torch. Due to the plastic base of this release, the model doesn't have much weight. This means it isn't ast on the track. Hot Wheels solved this problem by adding an extra piece of metal behind the seats. This is a separate piece.
