Itto Shoden Muto Ryuu was created by Kiritsu's father, Hataraki Taisei, following the teachings of his master alongside many other kenjutsu styles he learned during his time in the Land of Iron. Many years were poured into the perfection of this form. The form falls under the belief that the sword is more than just an extension of the arm. It's an extension of one's soul, and should be treated as such. One must sync their self with their sword to make the full use of this style. In creating his own line of transmission, he named it the Ittou Shouden Mutou-ryuu to emphasize that he was passing on the correct transmission of Ittō-ryū principles and techniques.

The term mutou (No-Sword) refers to Hataraki's stated realization that the difference between Sword and Self, and between oneself and one’s opponent is illusory and that the underlying unity of all is the most important thing in swordsmanship. This was the style he trained Kiritsu in. Kiritsu took the training to heart, combining himself and his sword into one perfect unity. Utilization of this skill requires the user to be in a united state of mind with his blade. When he moves, so too must his sword. Though this sounds simple, the execution can be difficult to master. The reason for this is because it's much more deeper than that. To move both body and sword requires the user to simultaneously move his body and his sword, creating a formation where their movements sync perfectly in unity with the swing of their sword, allowing them to provide a broad spectrum of different attacks that normal kenjutsu rarely accounts for.
