She and the USS Enterprise were assigned to investigate a unknown colony in system R-855, which ended in First contact with the Bajoran people. The Courageous and the Enterprise defended the Bajorans against an assault from the Ascendants, though the Courageous was heavily damaged and forced to land on the planet's surface. (TOS novel: Allegiance in Exile) By the mid-2280s, the Courageous was under the command of Captain March. In 2285, the Courageous was assigned a patrol near Starbase 13. In this year, the ship was attacked by the mirror universe starship ISS Enterprise. Following the assault, the Courageous suffered heavy damage, her life support systems were failing, and most of her crew lay dying. Fortunately, she was able to send out a distress call to Starfleet informing them of the attack.
