Any hero that enters a subterranean entrance on the surface, will instantly be taken to the corresponding exit underground. There are other ways to travel between the surface and the underground, like monoliths or whirlpools, both of which will take the hero somewhere else, but the subterranean gate is more commonly used for this purpose. In Heroes IV, the structure is called a tunnel, while in every other game, it's referred to as a subterranean gate.
