Doar, Jr., USNR, in command. Southampton proceeded to Charleston, South Carolina, where she was decommissioned on 18 September to complete fitting-out. On 8 October, she was recommissioned at Charleston, and Lt. Comdr. Lester V. Cooke, USNR, assumed command.
