The federal government of Australia was established as a result of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900 (Imp), an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. This act united the six existing colonies as a single nation, and gave that nation its independence from the Government of the UK. Prior to 1900, the landmass of the Australian continent was divided into six separate British colonies, all governed from the United Kingdom.
