  • The federal government of Australia was established as a result of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900 (Imp), an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. This act united the six existing colonies as a single nation, and gave that nation its independence from the Government of the UK. Prior to 1900, the landmass of the Australian continent was divided into six separate British colonies, all governed from the United Kingdom. A series of referendums were held across all of the colonies between 1898 and 1900, and the result was a draft constitution. This draft document was the reviewed and passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Queen Victoria gave her "royal assent" on 9 July 1900, upon which the Constitution became law. The Constitution (and hence Australia as a nation) came into force on 1 January 1901. Two loopholes in the Constitution meant that the the United Kingdom still had authority over Australia in some regards, namely the UK parliament could still command the individual states of Australia (though not the Federal government) and the State Supreme Courts could appeal to the UK Privy Council instead of the Australian High Court, if they so chose. The Australia Act 1986 eliminated these remaining ties.
