First contact between the Federation and the Tavnians occured circa 2357. The Tavnians maintained a consulate on Betazed in the 2370s, headed by Ambassador Deycen. It was there in 2371 that Lwaxana Troi met a Tavnian trade negotiator named Jeyal. (TNG - Slings and Arrows eBook: The Insolence of Office) The two were married shortly thereafter, and together conceived a half-Tavnian son who would be named Barin, a name which in the Tavnian language means "little one." (DS9 episode: "The Muse"; TNG novel: The Battle of Betazed)

- The Tavnians were a humanoid species whose two sexes were divided upon birth, with boys being raised by the men, and the girls by the women. Children were not told that the opposite sex exists until they turned 16. Male children were considered the property of their mother's husband (even if not the father). Males also considered their wives possessions.

Males also considered their wives possessions. Tavnian wedding ceremonies were centered around the groom telling the bride why he wanted to marry her and trying to convince her to take him as her husband. If anyone present doubted the groom's sincerity, they could challenge the validity of the marriage. Tavnian marriages could be annulled, and one way this could happen was if one partner married someone else. (DS9: "The Muse")
