  • Alongside the other gates of the Aurelian Walls, the Porta Nomentana was originally built between 270 and 273 CE by Emperor Aurelian as a single-arch entryway. It comprised two semi-circular towers, with the one on the left-hand later converted to a tomb for a famous orator at the court of Emperor Tiberius, Quintus Aterius. Quintus's tomb was demolished in 1827, and the construction of the British Embassy, which incorporated the wall, effectively sealed the gate, but the right tower still exists.
