She died just 7 days short of equalling the age of María del Carmen Figueiroa Freiria de Salgueiro, who was the oldest Spanish woman ever. Manuela Fernández Fojaco was born in Llamas, in the municipality of Aller, Asturias. She was approximately one year and two months younger than the oldest living person at the time of her death, American woman Gertrude Baines, and approximately nine years younger than all-time world recordholder French woman Jeanne Calment was at the time of her death.
