The M78 LAW (Light Assault Weapon) was a lightweight, shoulder-launched, multi-role, unguided rocket weapon used by the United Nations Space Command from 2561 onwards. Developed for and first fielded during the Remnant War, the M78 LAW was intended to complement the heavier M41B MAW, using a smaller, unguided rocket instead of a guided missile. Designed as a multi-role weapon, the LAW's unguided projectile was effective to some degree against a range of targets including infantry, light armour and fortifications, though it lacked the strength to deal significant damage to main battle tanks. The LAW was a reloadable single-shot weapon that remained effective out to ranges of over six hundred metres.

The LAW was a reloadable single-shot weapon that remained effective out to ranges of over six hundred metres. Due to the simplicity and effectiveness of the LAW's design, it remained in service largely unchanged until 2622, when the outbreak of the Galactic War prompted an improved and updated model, the M78B, to be introduced. This iteration of the LAW eventually served throughout the Swarm War, where it retained its effectiveness against most forms of target.
