abstract
  • An unnamed Defence Barrister represented Lachlan White at his plea hearing in November 2016 when he was charged with the attempted murder of his grandfather Lawrence White and perverting the course of justice. The hearing was disrupted by a fire alarm but Lachlan was remanded in custody. Lachlan's trial took place in January 2017 and the defence barrister argued that Lawrence's shooting was just an accident. He questioned Lachlan's mother Chrissie about Lachlan and Lawrence's relationship after the Prosecution informed the court that Lawrence was not Lachlan's biological grandfather. The defence barrister worried for the case when Lawrence was late for court as the case depended on Lawrence telling the jury he believed the shooting was an accident. Lachlan was then called to the stand where Lachlan took the blame for the shooting, but tearily insisted that it was an accident. Lawrence turned up and on the stand he lied that he couldn't remember anything past breakfast on the day of the shooting. Despite this, Lachlan was found not guilty of attempted murder, but guilty of perverting the course of justice.
