Later, when Kirk, Spock and McCoy visited the surface, Kirk learned that Sylvia had killed Jackson using a term from Human mythology known as "sympathetic magic". Sylvia explained, "I made an exact image of him. In the essence of my thoughts, the image was Jackson. When I killed the image and knew that it was dead – he died." Kirk thought her account was ridiculous, arguing, "You can't 'think' a man to death." Kirk, nevertheless, lamented the loss of Jackson, as he often did when he lost a crewmember. Wenig später wird Jackson zurück auf die Enterprise gebeamt, wo Kirk und Doktor Leonard McCoy bereits auf ihn warten. Als er materialisiert kippt er leblos von der Transporterplattform. McCoy kann nur noch seinen Tod feststellen. Doch plötzlich spricht jemand durch den Mund des Toten und warnt Kirk vor einem Fluch. Er soll mit der Enterprise sofort diesen Ort verlassen, sonst würden alle wie Jackson sterben. Auf der Oberfläche des Planeten erfährt Kirk mehr über die Hintergründe des rätselhaften Todes seines Besatzungsmitgliedes. Das in menschlicher Gestalt erscheinende Wesen Sylvia erklärt ihm, dass sie Jackson nur mit einem Gedanken getötet habe. Sie hat hierzu ein Ebenbild Jacksons erschaffen und als sie dieses Ebenbild im Gedanken tötet, stirbt auch der echte Jackson. (TOS: )
