According to McGranaghan, a businessman with links to the Glasgow underworld asked Thompson to have McGranaghan murdered, but instead a well-known Scottish boxer from Craigmillar was brutally stabbed to death in 1974, due to identity problems. In 1981, John McGranaghan was sentenced to life in prison for rape and assault against three women. He died of heart failure, at the age of 72.
