He played junior hockey for the Toronto Young Rangers and the Toronto Marlboros from 1945 to 1949. In 1948-49 he played for the senior Marlboros as they won the Allan Cup. In 1950-51 he turned pro with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Hornets but his season was cut short by sickness. He still won the Stanley Cup that year. Over the next five years he played mostly with the Leafs but also some in the minor pros. In 1953-54 he missed about half the season due to a shuolder injury. In the NHL Bolton played in 235 games and scored 10 goals and 51 assists.
