The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (normally called the Ballard Locks) are located at NW 54th St and 32nd Avenue NW (Map it!, Driving Directions). The locks are a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike. The locks themselves consist of large and small sections, which bring commercial and pleasure boats into and out of Lake Washington. There is also a fish ladder, including an underwater viewing chamber, which is especially fun during the annual salmon runs. The locks also provide a pedestrian path across the ship canal, connecting Ballard and Magnolia. (There is also a path on the Magnolia side that connects to the top of the hill at 32nd and Government Way).
