The Donkey Kong series is a major Nintendo series. It sometimes is considered it's own series, while other times it is consider as just an expansion of the Mario series. And it's Nintendo's 4th best selling series. The series stars Donkey Kong (really an adult DK Jr. from the arcade games) fighting King K. Rool and the Kremlings with help from his many friends, including Cranky Kong (really an old DK from the arcade games), Lanky Kong, and his best friend Diddy Kong. The series has a recurring theme to replace Cs with Ks, (for example instead of Kremling Crew, Kremling Krew), as both Kongs and Kremlings have Ks at the beginning of their names.

Donkey Kong Country had a Game Boy Color remake in 2000 which had a couple of differences. The series also had the Donkey Kong Land series which are interquels taking place between two of the Donkey Kong Country games, except for Donkey Kong Land III which does not have the events of Donkey Kong Country Returns, a non-Rare game, take over. The Donkey Kong Land series has three games; Donkey Kong Land, Donkey Kong Land 2, and Donkey Kong Land III. Donkey Kong Land III was released in Japan for the Game Boy Color. Two different games were released called Donkey Kong 64 and Diddy Kong Racing which are both games for the Nintendo 64. Donkey Kong 64 is a Nintendo 64 platformer being one of the sequels to Donkey Kong Country. Diddy Kong Racing is a spinoff racing game to the Donkey Kong series featuring Banjo and Conker who would later have their own series. In 2002, three other spinoff games to the Donkey Kong series were in development by Rare and Nintendo until all three were cancelled, due to Rare's move to Microsoft. The three games are as follows; Donkey Kong Racing, Diddy Kong Pilot, and Donkey Kong Coconut Crackers. Donkey Kong Racing was a game that was going to be for the GameCube and never had a replacement unlike the other two, due to Rare using the Xbox back then as their home console game they create games for. The other two were Diddy Kong Pilot, a racing sequel to Diddy Kong Pilot and Donkey Kong Coconut Crackers, the game that was going to be the first puzzle game in the Donkey Kong series, both for the Game Boy Advance. The two had been replaced as Banjo-Pilot and It's Mr. Pants respectively which are also Game Boy Advance games. Later on, Rare only worked on remakes for the Donkey Kong series on handhelds. The Donkey Kong Country series had remakes for the Game Boy Advance and Diddy Kong Racing had a DS remake. It is unknown if there are going to be more Donkey Kong games having remakes from Rare and Nintendo.
  • Donkey Kong is a video game franchise created in 1981 by famed Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, starring the titular anthropomorphic gorilla Donkey Kong, and it mainly consists of platformers and action puzzle games but also spawned several spin-offs. The series started out with the arcade game Donkey Kong, Nintendo's first big hit in North America, which involves Mario, originally known as Jumpman, saving Pauline from the original Donkey Kong, now known as Cranky Kong. The game Donkey Kong Country for the SNES, developed by Rare Ltd., made Donkey Kong its own franchise, having gameplay completely different from the original arcade game which is similar to the Super Mario series; said game also spawned two sequels, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, as well as the Donkey Kong Land series, a series for the Game Boy based on Donkey Kong Country. In M.U.G.E.N, most Donkey Kong characters are for collection purposes only because they have a limited moveset and gameplay, though some of them have more work put into them; many of these use sprites from the Donkey Kong Country series or other games, though some are custom-sprited.
