Though considered by many as a "backwater" place with little future, East City boasts what is recognized as Amestris' strongest offensive force. Having the closest proximity to Ishval, the Eastern Military bore the greatest burden during the Ishvalan Civil War, leaving it with many veteran soldiers. Much like the northern Briggs' soldiers share a special bond with their leader, East forces hold Lieutenant General Grumman in very high regards, going as far as betraying Central Command and King Bradley on his orders.

  • East City, better known simply as "The City" by those native to its streets, is the home of Detective Willy Whitelabel and the setting for all his cases. East City is a bustling metropolis, or as much as a major city can be in the throes of the Great Depression. This is thanks partly to its prime location facing the Atlantic Ocean, which allows it to deal in a good bit of trade. This prosperity has also attracted the mob, who have set up operations throughout the city. Their presence is so pervasive that they even have most of the city's police force and local politicians in their pocket.

East City is also home to a few famous alchemists, such as Basque Grand and Shou Tucker. The Marl River runs through the town, feeding drainage tunnels downstream.

Homeless and jobless people litter its streets while the wealthy and influential, for the most part, ignore the problem. Everyone else tries to eke out a living as best they can. Many turn to crime, either as part of the mob, or as independent operators.
