The term American Republics, also known as the Yankee Republics, refers to the six independent republics which formed from after the dissolution of the United States of America in 1788. The term is commonly used as an umbrella term for Carolina, Maryland, New England, New Netherland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia alone, leaving out the non-English-speaking republics of the Americas. In the early 20th Century, the term "Yankee Republics" became a common substitute for the six republics (especially within the United Commonwealth), with "American Republic" denoting any of the independent republics within the Americas (especially the [then] recently independent Latin Republics).
