Church played for the Syracuse Stars from 1936 to 1939 and was called up to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a regular for the Leafs until mid-season 1941-42 when he was traded to the Brooklyn Americans. He finally joined the Bruins in 1945-46 but only scored eight points in 43 games. He then played for two years in the American Hockey League and retired in 1948. In the NHL Church scored 4 goals and 19 assists in 130 games.

When the Americans folded in 1942, the Boston Bruins obtained Church's rights in a special dispersal draft. However, Church was in the Canadian military. He played in 1942-43 for Cornwall Army in the Quebec Senior Hockey League and then was out of hockey till the end of World War II. He finally joined the Bruins in 1945-46 but only scored eight points in 43 games. He then played for two years in the American Hockey League and retired in 1948. In the NHL Church scored 4 goals and 19 assists in 130 games.
