Abu-Bakr (573-634) was the father-in-law and successor of Muhammad. Abu-Bakr was the first Muslim Caliph. The origins of the Sunni and Shia split arose from this leadership succession, as the Shia felt Muhammad's successor should have been his cousin, Imam Ali.
